5/26 - 8/31 Help Jasmine If you would like to donate to help Jasmine and the Montes family you can do so at any Midfirst Bank. The account number is 2073001082, and checks are payable to Centennial PTO re: Jasmine Montes.

PHOENIX - Second-grader Jasmine Montes' life changed three weeks ago.

It was at that time when doctors found a cancerous tumor the size of a melon growing next to her heart. The growth is blocking the flow of blood to her legs and, just this week, the young girl lost both of her feet.

Through the difficulty, however, Jasmine has stayed strong. Her teacher, Duangkhae Strnad, stopped by the hospital to visit her just before her surgery and, when the teacher asked Jasmine if she was afraid, the girl replied "No, I'm just going to take a deep breath and tell myself it's going to be okay."

Jasmine's principal at Centennial Elementary School, Debbie Ybarra, described her student as "a tough cookie," saying she always has a smile on her face and makes everyone better just for knowing her.

But, while the family is facing this battle together, the hospital bills are inevitably adding up, an issue made more difficult because Jasmine's mother had to quit her job at a small company that could not offer to protect her job under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

To help with the mounting costs the children at Jasmine's school are emptying their piggy banks and the PTO at her school has created a bank account to accept donations for the family.

7/22 - 9/30 FREE CHILD CARE OFFERED TO VALLEY JOB SEEKERS In the interest of helping families in the Valley, two local child care companies are reaching out to help the unemployed. Sunrise Preschools and Tots Unlimited Preschools will provide free licensed child care for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old while parents go to job interviews. The two companies have been providing this service to families formerly enrolled in their childcare programs, and it’s been so well-received they decided to extend it to all families in the community. The idea behind Interview Care is to help families during this period of high unemployment, says Dana Vela, president of Sunrise Preschools.

“We are here for the community. We are the only child care centers to offer a free service like this, and it’s because we believe in supporting our community. We are the hometown child care centers that families like and trust,” says Vela. Several parents have already taken advantage of Interview Care, and they say it helped ease the stress of finding a babysitter at the last minute.

“When the phone rings and a prospective employer wants to meet you, many parents can’t easily line up child care on short notice,” says Vela. “Sunrise Preschools provides safe and reliable care, which allows parents to concentrate on making the best impression.”

To learn more about Interview Care for your family, visit Sunrise Preschools online at www.sunrisepreschools.com and Tots Unlimited Preschools at www.totsunlimited.com. Sunrise Preschools operates 17 facilities valley-wide. Tots Unlimited Preschools operates 10 facilities mostly in the east valley.
