Where, oh where, do I begin? I was born in L.A. to Mexican immigrant parents and moved to Arizona in my early teens. Blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada. Okay let me start with the good stuff.

Let me take you back, way back, back into time. I guess my radio story begins when I was in High School. I was very luck to go to a school that had a kick ass Media program. I got involved in that program as a sophomore and found a new love in my love, radio and television. My High School was hooked up with both a TV. and audio studio and gave the students a chance to learn all aspects of both, from writing to producing, directing and so on. During this time I had to chance to be in a Youth Summit type radio show on a local Spanish radio station. I had my first taste of “real radio” and loved it.

A couple of years later after interning at a local T V station and meeting so many people in both the radio and TV. , I got a phone call.. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the persons voice on the other end of the phone. It was a very popular morning show personality that I had met while in high school and ran into again during the time I was an intern. He asked if I was still interested in working in radio, ofcourse I said, YES! I went in the following morning a 6:30am and began as his co-host on the morning show on a bilingual station. Yes we spoke English and Spanish, ON THE RADIO. I could not believe it; I was actually going to be paid, to do this. Times where tough I had just began my first year of college, was working a regular job, and had just began a new quest in my life in the radio business. Needless to say I had many sleepless nights. I later had the chance to start working alone on the weekends. I still remember my first night on the air alone. I was losing my voice, on my first night on alone! Ugh talk about the pressure.

I’ve had the chance to work at quiet a few radio stations throughout AZ In every day part you can think of, from mornings to midday’s, drive home and overnights. Then finally in September of 1998 POWER 92 came into Melissa the Midnite Mamacita’s life. I was just hoping that I would get my chance here. I had always had a passion for slow jams but then what young girl doesn’t. I was so happy , the chance to work at a very successful radio station doing a slow jam show. I had never done a slow jam show, but soon Lights Out Phoenix became MINE.

I began taking everyone’s request and hooking them up with their favorite slow jams and sending out their dedications. But more than just that I began talking to them and listening to both the good times and bad times that they had in love. Then I just started talking to everyone who called in like a friend and what do you do when you suspect your friend is hurting or in pain, you try to help them out and offer them advice.

Lights Out Phoenix has developed into more than just your average slow jam show with dedications. It somewhere that you know if you listen you just might find what you need to hear during that time of your life whether it’s a song that makes you smile or even cry. Where some who is calling in with a problem is going through the same things you are. Light Out Phoenix has been a big part of my life from the day I ran into the studio announcing that I was engaged, and then later got married. Not the mention when I announced I would be a mommy, to the birth of my child. It all relates to love and what kind of show would it be if I didn’t share the love, in my life after you all share it with me. Thank you for making me part of you days, relationships, and lives all these years.
